Driving Test Information

About the driving test

The driving test is designed to see if you can drive safely and is governed by the Driving Standard Agency. The test takes approximately 35-40 minutes, in this time you must show that you can drive safely, read road signs, read the road ahead and deal with any situation that may arise. The test routes are designed to include a range of traffic conditions and different types of roads, for example you may be in the town centre one minute and the next travelling down the dual carriageway at 70 mph. During the test the examiner will tell you in good time where to go. During the test you will be asked to do two of the three manoeuvres you have been taught, you may also be asked to do the emergency stop exercise.

On the day of the test you will be picked up one hour before the driving test. The hour before is used to get familiar with the car and practise your manoeuvres. You must have with you your driving licence including the photo ID card, if you haven't got a new photo ID card licence you must have some other photo identification, i.e., passport. You should also have your theory pass certificate and your appointment card. Ten minutes before the test starts you will arrive at the test centre and wait in the waiting room, nerves sometimes kick in at this point, talking to the instructor can help (if not, there is a toilet).

The big day

The examiners come out spot on time and call your name, they will ask you to sign the top of the driving test form, don't worry, you're only signing to say that the car is insured. He will then ask to look at your documents, and then ask you to lead the way to your car. On the way to the car he will ask you to stop and read a number plate (20.5 metres), if you fail the eyesight test you will fail your driving test without getting into the car.

Show me tell me
New from September 2003 "Show me tell me" questions . This is where you will be asked two questions, one ‘show me’ and one ‘tell me’. The questions you are asked are in relation to the maintenance of the vehicle, i.e. 'show me how you would check that the horn is working correctly'. If you answer one or both questions incorrectly a driving fault will be recorded against you. For more information and the list of questions that you may be asked then: >>>>> Download Here <<<<<<

After the “show me tell me”exercise you will be asked to get into your car. When the examiner gets into the car he will take the driving instructor's A.D.I. Number, this means any mistake you make on the test will be recorded on the instructor’s record (so please pass). The examiner will then brief you about the test and then tell you to move away when you are ready.

Approximately 40 minutes later you will be back at the test centre, the examiner will tell you to turn off the engine and tell you whether you have passed or failed. Either way you will get a debrief on the results of the test, if you have passed he may still give you good sound advice on your future driving, if you fail knowing where you went wrong will help you prepare for your next test. I personally find listening to every debrief, pass or fail helps with future tests.
Congratulations Grace

Booking a Driving Test
If you are receiving driving tuition from a driving instructor and intend to take your test in their car then it is important that you get their permission before booking a test. You must remember that the instructor is the best person to tell you if you are ready for a test or not, no instructor would let a candidate go for a test if they are not ready. If you would like to see what standard you are at then ask the instructor for a mock test. Anyone who goes for a test and is not ready can be a danger to others, to fail a driving test can cost approximately £70 (2 hrs for the car and £39 test fee) if you fail because you were not ready you might as well have spent the money on extra tuition and so be better prepared.
